The Pros and Cons of Social Media?

Social media often fantasize because you have the curiosity to meet new people. Social media provides you to connect with your family and friends.

It has enabled us to deliver messages to our loved ones even at a long distance. But it’s having a dark side too which can scare you. I am writing this piece of article on my experience with Social media. I started my social media journey from the ORKUT( A social media network that originated before Facebook and Google Plus)

PROS of Social Media

Connection with friends and family members

Today everyone is connected on social media. I am saying this no matter where you are you can get connected by sending and accepting friend or follower requests.

Education easily available

One of the biggest pros of social media is that it has enabled everyone to be updated on any topic. Gone are the days when we need teachers, schools, and colleges for the skills and knowledge. Now there are social media networks and communities where you can learn and share knowledge.

Work on the noble cause

Social media channels have also enabled us to work for a common noble cause. For example, I run a Facebook page Stop Child Abuse and I can reach people who have similar interests irrespective of their caste, religion, or color.

Crowdfunding

Social media channels have enabled us to get funds for the needy ones. You might have seen a campaign or an ad saying that the child is in hospital and money is required. It is doing a great job for society and the people in need.

Surveys/Polls/Quiz

Social media has made surveys, polls( Polls can be of any type research or interest based), and quiz a lot easier than it was earlier. Gone are the days when you should have a dedicated team for conducting surveys, polls, or quiz.

Blood bank

Some social media channels like Facebook is involved in this noble cause. The needy people share the requirement of blood and if you are near you will get a notification that the blood is needed and that’s only when you have shown your interest in donating blood.

We can salute the efforts Facebook is making to serve humanity.

Advertising yourself and a brand 

Social media channels have enabled to advertise and promote the people surfing on social media. People on social media are attracted to make a purchase based on their interests. You can reach a new world using social media which increases your brand or business reach.

Uniform Code of Conduct

Social media follow uniform code of conduct and is not biased by any government. In India we say it vasudeva kutumbukam ( Whole world is our family ).

Cons of Social media

Posting inappropriate statuses/pictures 

Social media has a dark side that it cannot filter out every piece of content that is inappropriate for a certain audience. Although there are a lot of filters that can filter out such content but still due to the nature of social media sometimes you see such statuses and pictures which you should not see. But I am sure very shortly we will be able to see personalized content ( It’s already present in the form of social feeds but still evolving)

Hacked Account

In an online world, nothing is personal because your data remains on the cloud. Although most of these clouds are secured and encrypted yet there are some loopholes that attackers use to gain access to your account.

Now you are owned by someone you don’t know. SCARY!

Moral Policing

Social media poses a threat when a picture or a video is shared that is taboo in a specific community. It is a threat that cannot be ignored and social media channels take this very seriously if you post such content.

Sometimes even law firms and agencies can act which can put you in a lot of trouble if you are involved in any such activity.

Conclusion

Social media is a boon if it’s used positively. We know every creation has two sides and it is up to us that how we use it. I will conclude this article that I positively use Social media so that I can give something to society. Social media has made me reach a lot more people than alone using the blog.
