What is Meta Description in SEO
“The meta description tag in HTML is the 160 character snippet used to summarize a web page’s content. Search engines sometimes use these snippets in search results to let visitors know what a page is about before they click on it.”
Think Less about SEO & More about Click-Throughs
Or you can say that meta descriptions tell you and the search engine crawlers about the content in brief.
But here the question arises which is also one of the hottest discussion in the SEO community
IS META DESCRIPTION IMPORTANT FOR SEO
The Answer to this question is a bit dicey in the online community. Some with the viewpoint that it’s crucial and the others say the opposite.
However, I would like to show this based on the results I got on this website.
One of the most performing pages on my website is “SUBMIT GUEST POST,” and you would be amazed to know that there is no meta description in this post. I started writing the “SUBMIT GUEST POST” page and never thought that it would be ranked so high in almost all popular search engines.
Does this mean that search engines don’t give importance to meta description???
The Answer to this question is, “Yes, Search Engines give importance to the meta description, but if you don’t write meta description search engines work smartly and write it for you.
And believe me, they are much smarter than you in some cases.
So if you believe that search engines are smarter, then you have also to think that they can write meta descriptions better and more relevant than yours.
Let’s See the Analytics
I want to prove my point by showing you the analytics of MY most popular pages.
Now you ignore here the Homepage because it usually ranks higher on almost every website.
Moving on to the second most crucial post in terms of organic traffic, Submit Guest POST there is no meta description, that you can see in the next screenshot:
Now we move onto the next most popular page on my website i.e., “TOP 5 CYBERSECURITY CHALLENGES DIGITAL MARKETERS FACE”.
Again there is no meta description in this post. I will verify this by showing the screenshot below:
Similarly, when I checked other pages on my website that are performing well in Search Engine Results I found they do not have a meta description added.
Hence I was convinced that pages and posts with no meta description perform if the content is good and engaging.
Now, this is not magic!
It is because Search engines also thrive on giving the best user experience. It means they give preference to the post with a higher engagement rate. If people are staying longer on your page, it’s going to rank high in Search Engine.
FINAL WORDS
I am not saying that other SEO factors such as page speed, thin content, etc. are not very important. It just means that they do influence your search engine rankings, but if you had an excellent engagement in your post, you are going to win the race.
The SEO Rule Book keeps on changing and therefore we should keep on learning new tricks and tips to rank our keywords and pages well.
And lastly, I am not adding any meta description in this post. Let’s see the smartness of the search engine and what it includes in the meta description.
If you like this post and would like to add some points Plz comment and I would love to discuss it over here.
