In 2020, the importance of high-quality web design and super-fast user navigation doesn’t need to be explained. Businesses and even individuals with their own websites are aware of the amount of traffic and lead high-quality, and fast-loading websites attract. But what makes websites high-quality? Apart from the web designer’s competency, the type of file formats used in the site design makeup is equally important.

These design elements are highly important because they impact website speed. The faster a website loads, the more users it attracts. Yes, even one second makes a massive difference. According to leading web design experts –

On average, webpages take 3.21 seconds to load
Webpages that load in less than two seconds record bounce rates of 9%
Webpages that take close to five seconds to load record bounce rates of 38%.
Fast-loading webpages provide interruption-free user experiences. Customers feel a sense of control when their websites load in 2-3 seconds. After the 5-second mark, they start losing attention.

For example, the British Broadcasting Corporation‘s (BBC) website loses 10% of its users for every extra second it takes to load. Hence, it’s clear that brand names don’t matter much in the digital world.

If a website loads in a couple of seconds, it will experience an increase in traffic. If not, internet users will simply move on. Fast-loading websites are even more important for eCommerce platforms where the load speed is directly linked to sales and revenue-generation capacities.

What design elements make websites load faster and subsequently make the businesses look better in the eyes of the target audience? Using vector images has always been associated with providing the best viewing experiences on websites. These images also impact site loading speeds. Here’s how –

Vector Images and Website Speed

The internet is littered with a wide range of different graphics, image types, and file formats. For many years, while choosing from these options, web designers’ priority was always displayed quality. But, ever since Google made site loading speed a key requirement for websites that want to rank higher on their results pages, images’ loading features are now being valued as highly as display quality.

Vector graphics offer the perfect solution by meeting both of these requirements.

Display Quality of Vector Images

Vector images are nod made of pixels (unlike bitmap images). Instead, vector graphics consist of complex mathematical equations. These permanent codes containing mathematical equations help create non-pixelating and smooth images.

Hence, irrespective of the image size or the device on which it’s being displayed, vector graphics never lose their quality and are always in high resolution.

Vector Images for Web Designers

Vector images are ideal for web designers because they’re editable. Web designers can make as many changes as they wish to their vector graphics without worrying about decreases in image quality. That’s why all aspiring web designers are asked to find vector graphics editor by experienced designers.

Vector Images are Available in SVG

Vector graphics can be saved and exported in multiple formats – AI (Adobe Illustrator Artwork), EPS (Encapsulated PostScript), SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic), and PDF (Portable Document Format). Each format offers distinct advantages. Web designers choose one of these formats depending on the scope of the task and the types of programs these images need to be transmitted across (e.g., an Adobe Illustrator will use an AI file).

The SVG file format stands out amongst these formats as the most web-designer friendly format in the world. That’s because –

SVG files allow editors the scope to check the layers contained within the images. SVG files contain multiple layers. Each of these layers can be put apart, edited, and integrated back by web designers. Even the pre-programmed layers are editable. For instance, if an SVG file is too heavy or too hard to compress, editors can remove some layers or design elements to make it lighter.

SVG files are much lighter compared to PNG or JPEG files. They’re also more easily compressible. A 5MB PNG file will have the same image quality that a 20KB SVG file.

SVG files are intrinsically scalable. They don’t consist of a set number of pixels or bytes. They contain mathematic code, which is unchangeable, irrespective of the screen size. So, if a user opens an SVG file on an HD screen, the image will look high-quality. If the same file is opened on a small-sized device, the image quality will be the same. SVG files are known as crack-free because of this reason.

All browsers support the SVG file format. When used in web pages, designers can add separate text layers to their SVG files. This text can be optimized and filled with search-engine-friendly words. This added SEO boost increases the chances of the website ranking high on Google’s search results pages.

Promoting the use of vector graphics doesn’t mean editors should denounce raster or bitmap files. But, to make a website search engine optimized and fast-loading, the use of high-quality vector graphics is a must!
